In the early 1930’s Gideon Strange, a U.S. Postal employee, started raising flowers and other plants in his yard. Strange sold his products out of his yard, as well as at the 6th Street Market. Eventually he expanded with 8000 square feet of greenhouses in his backyard.

After Strange passed in 1947, his widow sold Strange’s Florist to William J. Gouldin, Sr. and William F. Kidd – two railroad engineers that used their jobs to fund Strange’s Florist. When the two men took over, the florist was still in its original location and was comprised of three small greenhouses. They also rented two greenhouses in another location.

In 1974, Strange’s opened its first brick-and-mortar location on Mechanicsville Turnpike, with 6000 square feet of florist space and 4000 square feet for a greenhouse – all while still operating the previous location for storage and greenhouse rental. In 1979, Strange’s purchased the former location of Paul’s Flowers on Broad Street to open 50,000 square feet of greenhouse space. After extensive remodeling, the Broad Street location opened to the public in 1981 as a full-service garden center. The Midlothian Turnpike location opened in 1982, and the Hull Street location opened in 1983. A remodel took place in the Mechanicsville store in 1984.

In 2004, the current West Broad Street location expanded to include 9,000 square feet of greenhouses, a retail store, a new warehouse and a large paved parking lot. This store currently stands at over 110,000 square feet of indoor space.
